How about some sort of log book of trips. Just an A4 hardback copy or something that's brought along on each weekend trip and on the bus on the way back someone write's something about the trip. Maybe even pass it around to a few random people to just get some feedback, people can say what they enjoyed or would have liked to see on the trip. Could be a cool thing to just have. Then at the end of the year stick some twine through it and hang it at the wall for people to look at if they want.

if the staff are already members do they not get the emails anyway? just a question... fair play aislinn for gettin in there, it'd be good to see more UL staff invlolved alright
with kiddies night i know its only supervisor money thats earned but if it grew substantially we could make something from it that could help us improve it or what not...
LIT membership i only think of it as a way to promote the club over there that they could actually go for... at the moment they dont know anything about over here most of them anyway so it could be a good thing to sort out, just as an extra place to get members and make sure that we had a somewhat working relationship with them.. it could lead to other things coming into question but we could look into it
the knot tying i was only thinking use both ends of the ropes, not to be cutting up a full retired one that lads coul use to coil and what not.
alot can be done at the wall to clean it up, i think paint is a simple thing that would make a good difference, also we could possibly put in a small storage unit for people to put bags or something under the shoe cabinet?
a wardrobe type thing in the slab
build on to the red wall opposite the wood wall?
would it be an idea to sit down in the first week next year and work out what we can do and what we cant? just take a ginormous print out of this shit and then maybe dish out? also i was thinking cos i will be training next year that we could give that more work by delegating the knots and belay stuff to that if even for the year? cos it would allow it to offer more and maybe make that a job of the officer? just another thought though
can we special apps rec 5?
i like that garion, that we even people coming in can see what the trips are like and get an understanding for how they run and the positives
i like that everyone has added to this by the way..

I don't know how possible it would be to build onto the red wall opposite the wood wall because of the window, but maybe it could be possible. I'd like to concentrate more on improving what we have at the moment rather then building on more stuff though, seeing as the wall got additions this year. I think if we can improve the wall as a space first, then consider adding on more if possible. That's just my opinion though. LIT we can definitely advertise, but if they have to travel here to come anyway, I don't see why they can't just sign up then :-P I mean their club could organise transport for anyone who wants to to come on over and join up/give it a go. I'm just thinking from our side of things its easier that they fill out our forms and pay us directly. I can't see any downsides from that. REC 5, I think, not sure at the moment, but I believe that it will end up going in with the actual proposal to the Arts and Sports Fund for the expedition as a whole. That I will have to double check though. With regards meeting at the start of the year, preferably I would like to try and meet everyone during orientation week, just so we can get things rolling straight away for Week 1 and yeah it would be the perfect place to discuss things In the meantime I would like to have various things posted in the Committee section of the forum so that they can be discussed throughout the summer anyway as a few of us are away. But yeh a meeting straight away next year is what I have planned. And ya Garion I really like that idea, feedback on trips would be a great idea. Could give us an idea of whats good, whats bad and what we need to improve upon. And hanging it up at the wall would be cool too. But yeh some great stuff coming up here guys.

More wall ideas:
* A MASSIVE poster (A2 or A1 even) with all the rules on it put up on the window. Smaller ones beside each section of the wall.
* A book like the gear one for kids night of disclaimers, one must be filled in for each kid and signed off by their guardian. I will do up a sample and post it over the summer.
* 'Name' each wall (for fun) like we did on the routeboard and write this name on each wall in paint.
* Smaller route boards for each wall.
* A disclaimer book for all members who want to use the wall.
* A sign in book for members that they must sign each night they are climbing (would be a great thing to have a record of exactly how many use the wall and how often).
* A blank rota sheet in the supervisors locker that the supervisor must sign each night so that the wall officer doesn't have to go searching for who ACTUALLY supervised each night. If you don't sign it you don't get paid.
I like the idea of having lockers there, but there are already ones in the changing rooms afaik. But some sort of shelving to keep the bags tidy and off the seat/floor would be handy. Maybe an open backed set of shelves on the window sill (coming over it a bit) from the shoe locker up a bit towards the red wall?

The only emails I have ever recieved from OPC are caving emails ! This is probably just an accidental oversight. I do think it would be a good idea to advertise on events because as you said there are very few staff/postgrads involved in the club. A lot of people don't know what clubs there are on campus and what they do particularly those postgrads that didn't do their undergrad in UL. Most postgrad miss the C & S sign up day in september as we can start at any time of the year and many of my postgrad / staff friends and collegaues keep asking where I do the hill walking / caving.
The club has a huge undergrad representation while there are virtually no postgrads/staff. I know in UL clubs and societies have a first year representative to help first years out (i hope this is still correct as it has been years since I have been on a committee) but perhaps it might be worth while giving thought to getting a postgrad/staff representative as they are basically first years again too when starting!
An example of what photosoc send on events is pasted below
Hi All, The U.L. Photography Society will host a talk entitled "Shoot for the Stars" tomorrow, Tuesday, evening at 7pm in room D1-050 here on campus. The talk will be given by woodsy Lillis, current Treasurer and Observation Coordinator for the Shannonside Astronomy Club (http://www.shannonsideastronomyclub.com/) as well as member of IFAS (Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies). woodsy is very well-respected in the astronomical field and has given talks on a number of astronomy topics at various events and venues throughout the years. He is also an avid photographer, and combining these two passions is the theme of the night's talk: - AstroPhotography, taking pictures of the heavens. Be it with a compact camera or through a telescope, Astrophotography can be a very rewarding field, as woodsy's talk will no doubt serve to illustrate. The event is open to all and takes place tomorrow, Tuesday, night at 7pm in room D1-050 of the Main Campus Building here. In addition to the talk and slideshow, we will also have a raffle for the Photo Society on the night... on offer is a 3-months membership pass for the UL Arena here on campus and a number of day passes. I've attached a poster for the event here as well... Any questions, etc come back to me Thanks, M.J.

Hey guys just a few ideas that might help.
With regards to kids nights:
would it be possible to set up a "Mini OPC" kids club requiring kids to pay a nominal membership fee (revenue for club) in return for a tshirt or club chalk bag (branded chalk bags available on line). Build a mailing list to keep kids up to date on wall opening times and events that might be run (kids league, technique night)
wall developments are always welcome from my point of view (i use it a lot!)
i would not like to see the wood wall painted as its not very steep and will eat shoes. There is no reason not to put up a rope on the slab, or drill the wall to its left for grips. there was never a health and safety issue until someone mentioned it earlier on in the post. the ropes can be pulled to one side to keep them out of the way when not in use.
lights heating and ventilation are a major issue and have always been, it would be great to see these addressed.
i know the wall is only a small part of what you do during the year, so hopefully any improvements in its use and it as an asset to the the club will be done so in order to help improve the enjoyment of what you do outdoors, caving srt, bouldering, trad climbing, sport climbing...
ps if i can be of help in any way for anything during the year just let me know.
Harr

may be worth considering buildin a proper campus board somewhere, like off the column maybe. wouldnt really take up any space and would make a great addition to the wall as well as making us all shit hot climbers

How about for next year some ULOPC events especially for rag week and Christmas days, as a way to raise money for charity.
Also a "Try a cave night" if possible. The SUI (caving club of ireland) did one this year.

Just ad a brain wav while looking at conor "the poser" bredins blog.
People were talking about having a log book of the clubs trips. I was thinking we could have one seperate one for trips so that future leaders can look back on it from that point of view.
Also why not start a club blog so that there will be a constant record of where we went what we did. We can put up the group pics etc there too. It'll look great for the club and also be a great asset for potential members to look at.
