I dont fully get the laminated route card idea. I'd think it wouldnt be as flexible as a board, as no ones gonna go ok now that I'v set a route Ill run off, print out something, laminate it and such. The only problem with the current board is that it doesnt take the chalk well and its a bit small. A large clean white board, hung up properly, along with numbered wall sections, is the easiest and best way of doing things. Routes would be described as such
Green - Section 3 - V7 - sit start Blue - Section 3 - V2 - stand start
its easy to follow. One person could be left in charge of the board with the job of grading and documenting (preferably someone with good writing). It would be the route setters job to point out a new route to this person and see that it is added to the wall.
I think setting routes for the most part would be best left to people who we know can set good routes. I'v seen routes set where some holds arent needed, and often they will contain one really hard move and several pointlessly easy moves. The key to a good route is sustained difficulty, whatever the level. If someone's setting bad routes it should be said to them and they can go away :-) It's something that just comes from climbing experience I guess and maybe being a perfectionist.

Using the laminated route cards is probably clearer and easier to follow instead of a whiteboard though. Its really common at climbing walls. Down along the bottom of the wall, at the start of each route, you have an A4 sheet with the route information, such as Green, 5a.
I always found the board to be confusing and I think any replacement board would also be confusing for beginners. Plus whiteboard marker comes off very easily so all it takes is someone to rub off it or a jacket to be thrown on the mantel in front of it ant the information gets rubbed off.
Plus, assuming we do put the campus board in, where are you going to put the whiteboard?

The Idea genius (Colm) is to laminate a bunch of cards with the headings printed on them and then you fill in the details with a white board marker later. The cards are then reusable because you can wipe the marker off easily. You dont have to run off and make one up every time you set a route.
A combination of cards and white board would be best. The cards allow people to walk up to a wall and know exactly what route they are getting on. The board allows people to walk in to the room have a look up at the board and decide what wall they would like to start on.
The white board could be mounted on top of the campus board with access via the ladder thus stopping any one from tampering with it.
The idea behind having the route named makes it a personal thing, having the route setters name means if anyone is confused about the route then they can ask the setter and the date means we can keep track of when it was set, how old it is and encourage someone to re set.

You'd be as well using acetate markers to fill out the details on the laminated sheet. Whiteboard marker will come off too easily. You could have a bottle of rubbing alcohol, or methylated spirits in the gear press to wipe the acetate marker off whenever you wanted to reuse the lam'd sheets.

darragh: I never said it was my idea, I merely said I mentioned it to Davis Anyhoo, I agree with woodsy and Darragh K here, it's all well and dandy throwing all these ideas out there but we need to make plans, think realistically and just get it done I think somebody should take charge, wall/climbing officer or someone. Take all these ideas down, read up on what it'll cost, make some decisions and get planning dates, getting people together to help out and what not.

ah ok i see. ;D
Darragh, if the boards confusing now its because of the silly names used to define the different walls and the large voloume of routes per wall.
Numbering sections of each wall would solve both problems. There would be absolutly nothing confusing on the board.
I was thinking it could be screwed across those verticle window beams or something but if the campus board goes in then on top of that would be perfect. It jus needs to be put high enuf to deter people (children!) from playing with it and to avoid accidental rubbing.
