unsung hero is a really good book its an autobiography of the life of tom crean its an amazing story tom crean 1877-1938, tom crean never wrote a book, he could just about read. micheal smith wrote his biography. an even better read than unsung hero is "shackeltons forgotten men" by lennard bickel. shackelton, crean and the crew of the "endurance" pulled there life rafts across antartics ice floe's for 90days (i think) after their ship was suronded and crushed in the ice. On reaching open sea they rowed to elphant island. it was from here that shackelton, crean and a third member took one of the life rafts out to sea to sail to king george island. after reaching king george island they had to cross one of the most hostile and unexpolred enviroments in the southern hemisphere. by foot, with no food or equipment. not the equipment we have today i.e. gore-tex. they crossed this unexplored and unmapped island to reach a whaling station run by the norwegians, to get help for the rest of the crew still stranded on elphant island. it was there initial plan on setting out, to cross antartic from one side to the other, taking in the south pole. but the loss of the endurance changed this.
