OK LADS…So I think it's time we started over. Too much confusion about where were going etc with the old thread so this is the new official alps thread.
SO! ALPS TRIP ‘08 We are heading in the direction of Vicosoprano (JUST OVER THE BORDER INTO SWITZERLAND) the location of this years MCI Alpine Meet. We won’t be taking part in it but we will be in the area while it's on.
We’ve decided that were going to head over for the last two weeks of July and the first week in August. (LEAVING 19th JULY RETURNING AUGUST 7th)
This means that people need to get out and start training. We want people going on 2-3 40min runs a week plus people down at the wall at least twice a week. We’ve got a lot of work to get done. Were bbeing really strict about this lads!
Only me and keith showed up for the run on wednesday. Theres another this friday at 6.30 if any are interested. By next week all who are interested in going would want to be on these runs.
Next week at the AGM I will be giving a talk about the trip i.e. Where, when, what were doing, what we you need etc. As well as that I will also be taking deposits of €50.
MAKE SURE AND SPREAD THE WORD!!! ;D

This is the link to what the MCI reccomends you have. www.mountaineering.ie/documentbank/uploads/Kit%20list%20for%20MCI%20Alpine%20Courses.pdfThe club will provide crampons and ice axes aswell as harness and helmet etc. You're going t o want a decent bag aswell. Ill go through the ear in more detail at the Alps talk which will take place at the AGM next thursday. We havent yet confirmed the dates for the start of training as Robbie is away at the moment. We hope to know for thursday. It'll be 3 days long, same as last year.

Rite guys, anyone who is interested in heading to the alps this summer really needs to start training...there will be a group run once or twice a week but thats not to say you can't go running yourself more than twice a week...training & building up fitness is very important... Next thing is climbing, the wall is only open for another two weeks before it closes as it does every year around exam time...thats still leaves time to climb ... This is a great opportunity to get away to the Alps with like minded climbers for a few weeks and experience Alpine routes along with banter & craic...So if your interested don't just keep quiet... Check out the earlier links in this thread for more info...should prove to be another good climbing trip ;D ;D ;D...

Right lads so for the training weekend/fitness test for the alps we've come up with this as a provisional plan. We'd leave Limerick on the Friday evening which gives people a chance to make the trip. We need about 3 cars. Say Gahan, paul, and jim if they're available to drive. We drive down to kerry on the Friday evening. That night we bivy or stay in tents if it is wet. The next morning we get up and head for howling and curved gully ridge, leaving the majority of our gear at camp and then we pick it up when we return. After that we pick up our gear and we do a small hike down off ben kerragh down to a lake where our next camp is. Stay the night there. The next morning we hike all the way to kay kearneys with our full rucksack .
This weekend will be the last weekend in may or early june but not the bank holiday weekend. If you want to go to the alps you have to do this test !!!

Because in order to be sure that everyone is ready we needed to include both climbing and long walks. Plus this sounds like more craic.

This training weekend has got everything in Ireland that could cater someone for the alps, from climbing, to walk ins with heavy rucksack, and to camping/ bivy. it will require fitness and climbing technique. this notice should give you the extra kick(if you are not doing so already) to do more training
These ridges will give people a taste of what the alps are like, and show them what exposure is like!!
let us know what ye think???

Great idea.
Sounds like a good challenge, looking forward to it. Early June would suit me better for it.

If there's room for me, d'ye mind if I tag along on the training weekend? Either way I don't mind, might not be suitable.
