Orienteering Intervarsities Training Weekend 16-18th November
Location: Cahir, Co. Tipperary
Accommodation: Rented Houses
What is orienteering?
Orienteering is an adventure sport involving navigation with a compass and a map. The aim of the sport is to naviagate around a specified course and reach certain points in the shortest time possible.
The orienteering intervarsity training weekend this year will take place on 16-18th Nov 2007. UCCO, are organising this one in association with Cork Orienteering Club so there will be plenty of coaches available to help beginners and to give advice to those who have orienteered previously. The way the weekend works is that people arrive on the Friday night and coaching and training is available from the Saturday morning. This involves explaining what is involved in orienteering, basic map work, compass skills, pace counting, and how to read contours. The way the weekend is designed is to accommodate everyone of all levels and beginners are encouraged to attend as it is one of the few opportunities for them to benefit from the expertise of their peers and still enjoy the social side of a weekend away.
Saturday 17th
Student training courses in Glengarra Woods, Tipperary.
there will be a bike-O going on in Clonmore North that day. This involves the opportunity for those interested in mountain biking to further expand in their sport.
Mountain bike orienteering is an endurance sport attracting both orienteering and mountain bike enthusiasts. The most important orienteering skills needed are route choice and map memory.
Extremely good bike handling and ability to cope with steep slopes both up and down is an absolute must for a top level athlete. Competitors may not leave paths and tracks.
There is also the opportunity to join in with CorkOs night orienteering event in Glengarra
Woods. This involves basic orienteering at night time using head torches.
Sunday 18th
Join in with CorkOs Sunday Munster league event in Clonmore North
As you can see not only will the weekend involve showing you the basic skills involve din orienteering you will also get the opportunity to put these new found skills into practice through the different forms of orienteering - foot/day orienteering, mountain bike orienteering, and night orienteering.
Anybody that is interested in attending or has any questions about the weekend away can you let me (Sharon) know on sharon@ulopc.com as I will be taking numbers and letting people know the final cost, which should be similar to other OPC weekends away. Deposits will be taken in the next couple of weeks. Further details will be announced closer to the trip, but just so that ye can make a note of it now!
