Hi all,
I met up with Paul Lee this morning and we had a chat about the boathouse and the possibility of another similar facility being built for other clubs and socities.. i.e. another building for the same purpose as the boathouse...
on the back of that paul was mentioning that Exec will be sitting in january and will be developing a three year plan.
the point is thus if anyone has ideas of longterm facilities (training, storage etc ) that the OPC as a whole could benefit from longterm for the next say 10-15 years can you post them or tell one of the club committee members.
what we are looking for are ideas and the benefits associated with them.....
Just to through some of my own early ideas out there...
i.e - a climbing wall facility perhaps- does anyone have an example of one currently in existance to model a room on for us in particular?
Storage for club gear?- size dimensions etc
A drying room?
A training room?- large class room with incorporated ROck climbing training facility?- i.e.... built in bolts etc
I know it would be a while off before anything would be available but if the club is to benefit in the future it would be up to us to get the OPC voice out there at this stage
A proposal will have to be drafted soon if the committee are in favour of the oportunity

Hi All
I am in favour of this I think this is an exciting time to expand the club with new facilities its time we got a new climbing wall I know it wont happen for a while but its good to start planning.
Also I am in favour of a drying room, storage facilities the club needs it and also a traing room would be great. In fact I agree with all your points Cillian.
We should defo go for the expansion of the boathouse. I am happy to meet up and disuss this any time.
Harr your input on a new climbing wall would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I'll throw in my Exec opinion here.
This is another development of a facility for clubs and societies, not necessarily a boathouse expansion. The idea would be something like a Club house and it may be better suited on the north campus where it would be more accessible to students on campus and also visibly present.
The SU is very close to full and a societies still have nowhere to call home. So this place should have a seminar room for debates, club talks, etc. Meeting rooms. Storage. And training facilites.
I would be massivley in favour of developing our own climbing wall detatched from the arena completely. After all the rowers got all that stuff in the boathouse, and we have a bigger active membership.
Its good to hear ideas, we will be meeting in January to discuss this in detail and we are hoping to have a proposal for council next semester.

I think the modelling of a room is not as important as how you use the space when it comes to building a new climbing wall. pretty much any space (as long as its big enough) can be turned into an excelllent wall if if is planned out well enough

One of the best self contained walls i have ever seen is in a tiny swiss village called Meringen. here is a link to some pics. kletterhalle-haslital.ch/gallery/kletterhalle/Fotos%20Kletterhalle/index.htmlIts such a simple wooden box really well kitted out. there is climbing on two walls and the forth contains a raised platform/ Viewing area/ coffee bar under which a bouldering wall is contained and behind which is a storage area. one wall is broken up by a large sliding door which allows the room to be completely opened up for events and access for scissors lifts for route setting. either side of the bouldering/storage area is more climbing surface that flows right across the roof. Simple and effective. I think this is a realistic target and i am absolutely sure it would be used 10 times more than the current boat house and accommodate hundreds of students throughout the year. The current wall is already too busy at times during the week and thats down to space. The wall already provides a place for 20 to 30 students to meet a couple of times a week and this is in its current state, imagine what might be achieved with a space similar to the Meringen one? its probably a pipe dream but it cant hurt to make the relevant people aware of whats possible.

Hi Guys, Anything come of this?
Having been on the exec that OK'd the boathouse all those years ago, pipedreams are a good thing. People thought they were mad - indoor water rowing! - now its being used by clubs and international teams all the time, and most importantly, it brings a hell of alot of prestige to the University. The foundation love that!!!
If your looking for ideas have a chat with the guys who built the wall in Dingle. Many thought they were mad. My pipe dream: Indoor Adventure Centre - Walls, standing waves for surfing and Canoeing.........think big!
Late night musing over!

It was actually just brought up in C+S Council last night. I wasn't there myself but Cillian was and he expressed the clubs wishes to be involved in it for things like, storage facilities, drying room, climbing wall.
I think last night as to gauge more who else would be wanting to get involved, but it is from here on in that the proper work will be happening regarding it.
Pipe dreams are great hahaha

Howdy,
Following on from committee descussions last nigth at council on behalf of the OPC i proposed that any new C+S development should have the following facilities for use by the OPC
*a climbing Wall *Storage facilities for the Club trailer *drying facilities for CLub gear *Storage for Club Caving/ Climbing/Orienteering Gear
The question now is for us to have a definition of what dimensions and layout these should have in an ideal setting. So if people have ideas let us Know ASAP
many of the other clubs and societies on campus are looking for more training storage and general C+S space for themselves so the likelyhood of a new C+S building being built is high...
