Hi guys
Final info from UCC
Hi all,
The Orienteering Intervarsities training weekend will be held in
Inch/Killarney on the 6th/7th of February. The training event is suitable for all levels of experience and fitness. On Saturday, we will be training on the sandunes at Inch Strand on the Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry and on Sunday, KerryO are staging an orienteering event at Knockreer estate in Killarney National Park that we will attend. This is where everything learnt on the Saturday can be put to use in a real orienteering event.
*Plan for Saturday is:*
10.30: - Meet at Inch Strand
11-13: - Practice map techniques
13-14: - Lunch
14-15.30: - More practice
15.30 -16.30: - A course to practice what you've learned
I can also have an 800m or so route marked out on the dunes if some people fancy a bit of hills training, just let me know beforehand.
We have booked a hostel in killarney national park
www.killarneynationalpark.ie/Hostel.htm for the Saturday night, which we hope is up to standard but please bring sleeping bags. Breakfast will be provided on the Sunday morning also before heading to the event at Knockreer.
Total cost including accomodation, maps on Saturday and the event on Sunday is €25, which I will collect on Saturday. Anything else is up to yourself.
Please let me know if you plan to attend for definite as soon as possible. Also if you could let me know what level of experience you have, if you are an absolute beginner just say so and if you are a regular orienteer.
If you have any questions about anything at all let me know and I'll try and sort it out.
Kieran
**I will be attending the event and will take charge of the entries so if people could contact me ulo at orienteering.ie or Jerome or any of the lads on the comm and we can get some final numbers.
What to bring:
1) Plenty of clothes for all weather - need to stay warm and dry on Saturday because we will be outside all day. So hats, gloves, rain jackets, rain pants, lots of socks! For the training event you can wear runners or hinking boots, whichever is most comfortable for you. Runners are ideal if you are planning on running around but if you want to take it at a more leisurely pace it wont matter. And PLENTY OF CHANGES OF CLOTHES.
2) Sleeping bag
3) Compass if you have one.... no worries if not. there are a few spares floating around the club
4) Camera - Kerry and Killarney is a fantastic area with great scenery
5) A pen is also really handy to have
6) Money for food and drinkies Sat night
Meals are not included so we will all head for some grub sat night but be sure to bring plenty of snacks to keep you going.
So if people are planning on attending what I need to know is:
1) Have you orienteered before
2) If so, what level/how much experience
3)What you want most from the training - what I mean here is some people use it just to practice map reading/nagivation skills rather than to get into the sport itself
4) Whether you intend staying Sat night or just doing one day of the event
5) Any medical conditions that we should know about (just the serious ones please)
As always, pop any questions to me at any time. Ill be happy to answer them
And thats all folks
