Its great to learn something from friends but there is nothing like seeing a complete professional show you some of the "tricks" he/she has learnt down through the years, plus the knowledge that you know you can do something cannot be valued. All of these courses/assessments will be subsidised by the club! If you are interested in any of these courses feel free to ask questions here. Darragh

Aw, SPA Training is on the same day as my FYP demo days Also, what's the difference between mountain leader training and the mountain skills assessment, and what's involved?

Sorry that is a typo, it is in fact the 9th of April (weekend) that it is on, original post is now edited to include that.
ML training is training towards doing the Mountain Leader Award.
Mountain Skills assessment is an assessment of Mountain Skills 1 and 2. You have to have completed MS1 + 2 to do the assessment and have logged walks.
You can only begin ML training once you have the MS assessment completed, and you have to have registered to do the ML.
Basically, MSA is in between MS and ML. Anyone who has done MS is eligible to do the assessment.
Hope that helps,
Darragh

Here is the list of all the SPA courses being ran in Ireland. www.mountaineering.ie/trainingandsafety/viewdetails.asp?ID=41&TypeID=16You could take a place on any of them and the club could still subsidise you. There is one in June in the Burren if that suits better. I just chose the one in April because it was jut before the That different time of year when Jesus dies break and it was during the academic semester. Darragh EDIT: Forgot that I had E4STER filtered

You dont need it to do the training, you just need it to do the actual Assessment itself.
However, we will be looking into running a REC course with another club shortly.

Rec 3 is three days of 9-5.
Here is there anyone out there who wants to do a rec 3 refresher course which is only two days and of course costs less

Ok this is just a thought as I might not even have a job or even still be in the country by the summer...
But does anyone want to do their ML assessment? (for those who've done the training obviously) Have done no research into yet but i've been meaning to get the actual award out of the way for a while now but never gotten round to it, would have to check out if the irish ML is the same as the UK one first which i'm not too sure about at the moment. Let me know if you're interested though.

Hi Andy,
The Irish and British ML are the very same. We use the BMC for almost everything. According to some of the Irish guides, it is harder get an ML in Ireland than it is in Britain, apparently they are far more stricter here.
There are a few people who have done the training and have still not done the assessment in the club. The club will be subsidising 1 course so that is 4 people.
Id really recommend doing the assessment even if you have no intention of taking it any further. Its a great refresher because Day 1 is pretty much a refresher and the guide we use will teach you lots extra, delving into bits of micro navigation etc.
