So you’re thinking about coming caving? Brilliant….but first you have to be a member of the Outdoor Pursuits Club (OPC).
Joining the OPC
In order to join the club you must first pre-register. This is free and can be done by using the link registercs.ul.ie/
You can create a log-in for yourself on the top left-hand side of the page. Once you have done this you will find the OPC in the clubs section. If you have already pre-registered for another club or society then just log in and look in the clubs section for the OPC.
How to complete your registration
Registration makes you a member of the big OPC family and is really easy. The C&S (Clubs and Societies) Recruitment Drive takes place in the University Sports Arena on the 7th of September (That’s Wednesday of Week 1) from 5-9pm. Pre-registering before the Recruitment Drive means that you get to skip all the queues and it only costs €5 to join for the whole year!!!
The arena is number 22 on the following map:

Don’t worry if you miss the Recruitment Drive, you can still join any time after that. Just get a member of the committee to register you.

Why Caving?
Caving, potholing, spelunking…The OPC prefers to call it fun. A caving trip involves going into one of Ireland’s many caves, an experience which may be dry, wet, muddy, tight, not-so-tight or a combination. Your first trip will always be designed to catering for beginners to ensure you enjoy the experience and is generally a walk-in-walk-out trip. The adventure begins by locating the cave entrance, which depending on the cave can make for a very interesting start to the trip. Mud baths and waterfall showers are supplied free of charge. Once inside the cave, prepare for an environment so diverse and beautiful you will wonder why you didn’t try caving sooner. Geography lessons are standard, science lessons are available on request and history lessons occur where applicable. And if you are lucky you may find a friendly frog or two.

Is that all there is to caving?
Not at all. Along with Mid-week caving trips there are also weekend trips to Fermanagh, a week-long training trip to Yorkshire along with one day trips some weekends.
There is also training during the week for knots and ropework for use in vertical caves along with learning the skills that go with SRT-Single Rope Technique, the method by which vertical caves are accessed.
