In caving news this week. There is a Basic Cave Leader BCL course being run in north clare the weekend of the 24-26th April. A number of you have expressed an interest in getting some caving courses done and this is one not to be missed. The course will commence at 7.30pm Friday 24th and finish about 4pm Sunday afternoon. Having completed this course you will have obtained training for taking groups on caving trips and have made good contacts with other cavers from around the country. It also promises to be a very social weekend in the heart of the Burren. The cost is €100 for the full weekend course and accommodation in north clare. This will be in part subsidised by the OPC as per usual. If you have any interest I need to know ASAP as the names and deposits have to be handed in by this Thursday evening.Mise Le Meas Cillian ;D cillian@ulopc.com

For anyone interested Clare and I completed the BCL course this weekend. This was an excellent course and I would recommend it for anyone interested in caving leadershop skills. It opened my eyes to the technicalities involved in caving and it has thus enhanced my enjoyment of caving believe it or not ļ
The weekend consisted of a briefing on Friday evening on what are general knowledge levels were, what to expect from the course and a presentation on discussion on leadership skills.
Saturday was broken into 3 main sections. In the morning we observed a caving leader from the Burren Outdoor Education Centre with a group of children in Poll Gorm.
In the afternoon we went to Poll na Gollum for a technical cave and to have an opportunity to lead and get constructively criticised.
In the evening we were debriefed and reviewed the day¡¦s events. We had a do a short presentation on the topic that we were given earlier in the week. We also had a presentation on child protection policies.
The following day we caved in Cullaun 1 and had mock incidents to deal with as leaders such as an epilectic fit, and lost child.
In the afternoon we reviewed the day and we were informed on what was required of us for the assessment for leader skills.
Overall an excellent weekend of caving and craic!

Congratulations to both Clare and Aislinn for completing the BCL training course. I was delighted to see both of you show your enthusiasm over the week end and could see a broadening of your outlook in relation to Caving
Being involved in the training course myself i got to see things that other leaders are doing and refresh/ review my own techniques.
Ye got to experience trips into three of 4 caves too over the weekend so I look forward to ye taking some groups underground yourselves..
Keep it up

Cheers to Cillian for organising the Cave Training weekend. Myself and Aislinn had a brilliant time and learned so much. Its a great way to meet other cavers and learn more about the technical side of caving. The catspiders were a particuluar highlight!!
For anyone interested, the Clare Caving Club (google this) go on trips once a month (usually the 1st Sunday) and would be happy to have newcommers join them.
