Hi guys
The Munster Orienteering Championships are being held this Sunday, November 1st in Toureern Wood, Cahir, Co. Tipperary. Those who are competitive have already pre-entered but anyone can show up on the day and there will be a number of colour-coded events to suit all levels of ability.
Toureen Wood is one of the last remaining mature forests on the Northern slopes of the Galtees. To run in this forest will be an experience and will demand both physical fitness and good navigational skills. The area selected has mature coniferous forest with good visibility, free of brambles, providing fast run except for parts where long grass and stones may impede running. The forest has a good road track network with steep sided ravines and dry gulleys which run down the slopes which are characteristic of Galtee maps.
Directions: If coming from Limerick, follow the N24 heading for Cahir and drive though Bansha. After Bansha, there will be the Lady Gregory Pub (about 9km from Cahir) and turn right here. There will be orienteering signs directing people to the event. These signs will be white with red writing and may have a control kite symbol on them.
If coming from Cork take the M8 and leave at exit 11 to take the N8 as far as the old Cahir Roundabout. Turn left here to take the N24 (Tipperary Town/Limerick) and continue along this road until you come to the Lady Gregory Public house (approx 7k). Turn left here and follow O-signs to be directed to the parking.
If coming from Dublin leave the M8 at exit 10 and follow roadsigns for Tipperary Town/Limerick. At the old Cahir roundabout continue on the N24 as far as the Lady Gregory Public house (approx 7k) and take the left turn, continue to follow O-signs to the parking.
I will be there myself from about 10.45am and can help anyone that wants to know about the sport, what course is right for them and what the map and the symbols look like and mean.
Any questions, just pop me a mail
Sharon
