We gonna start training up the newbies who are coming along at all? I know there are a few planning on going who don't even know how to belay yet... Surely we should get them all to a point where they can top-rope belay at least... that way everyone can do their own thing within reason without some of the more advanced peeps being stuck belaying all day. We could setup all the top-ropes for them and they can climb among themselves that way. Apparently a lot of the easy/hard routes are close together too so we can keep an eye on em and will be nearby if there are any problems And for those that won't be leading, surely if they feel up to it they can probably second a few climbs too

I would hope that as a minimum people will know how to set up top ropes, belay and due to the nature of where we're climbing... ascend ropes. Who evers going should be making the effort to learn this before the trip if ye're reading this

Sorry colm to butt in here but i have been in the club a while and people post stuff like you just did and never back it up. Look its great what you said about making an effort to learn and that they should of they intend on going. But hey you should set a date and say right i will teach ye how to set up a top rope system on such a date and time. The castle is not a bad place to teach them how to do it, then they get to climb aswell.
If this is done beforehand, it will make the whole trip run a lot smoother over in wales...

That's what I'm trying to get done I'm more than happy to help out with the basic training if Darragh's happy with that. The castle's a nice idea actually. A few of us were there during the week just climbing away and I wouldn't mind going back again and I agree it'd be a decent spot to teach em the basics of setting up top ropes.

Alot of people will have Learning to Lead done so that will be great training. All others are welcome to come to the climbing wall to learn how to belay, but I would agree maybe trying to set a night next week for all those willing to come down.
But as well, this trip is about training and so I will be hoping that all senior members/climbers there will be helping out the younger ones, not only showing them how to set up a top rope, but also staying with them for their first few leads, offering support and advice ;-)
It's about getting the balance right guys, and you are all there to help each other.
