The Chile 33
RTE 2 Television
Wednesday October 12th, 7.35 pm
Irish World Academy photographer-in-residence Maurice Gunning was cinematographer behind this documentary, to be aired on RTE television this evening at 7.35 pm on the first anniversary of the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners. Maurice will be interviewed on Today with Pat Kenny this morning at 10.15 am.
Filmed during the rescue in the San Jose mine, the documentary charts their hellish ordeal, remarkable bravery and eventual rescue while revealing damning evidence of negligence that led to the catastrophe at the mine. The documentary traces the tragic events that started on August 5th as 33 miners were trapped nearly 700 meters below ground in the Atacama desert, Chile. It depicts the highs and lows of the rescue operation as step by step, the rescuers planned and executed the miners’ release. The documentary includes exclusive interviews with the miners themselves and divulges the men’s innermost feelings during their 69 day ordeal along with interviews with the miners’ families, officials, politicians and rescuers. It reveals compelling evidence that greed and flawed safety procedures triumphed over worker well-being at the San Jose mine. The miners’ dramatic rescue on the 13th October 2010 was watched live by a global audience of more than 1 billion people.
The Chile 33 premieres on RTE 2 on the 12th October 2011 at 7,35pm and has secured a worldwide release with Off The Fence Distribution. It will be shown in over 50 countries worldwide on The History Channel.
